US President Donald Trump is in the news once again with his comments. Speaking about the presidential election in Brazil, he mistakenly referred to the country as India. Soon after the first round of voting in Brazil ended, Trump made a post to this effect on his social media platform 'Truth Social'. His comments led to a big debate on social media.
"Today, 125 million people voted in the first round of the Indian presidential election. As soon as the voting ended, the results came out the same day! But, in cities like Detroit, Philadelphia, and California in America, even though the number of votes was lower, it will take weeks to count the results. The voting system in America is corrupt!!!" Trump alleged in his post.
However, he did not notice that in India, people do not directly elect the president. It is noteworthy that the official White House Rapid Response account also reposted Trump's post.
Soon after Trump posted, thousands of social media users corrected his mistake in the comments section. It was clarified that the elections were held in Brazil, not India.
The real situation of the Brazilian elections
The first round of voting for the presidential election was recently held in Brazil. In this, right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro showed a slight lead over the current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. However, no one was able to secure more than 50 percent of the votes needed to win. With 98.81 percent of the votes counted, Bolsonaro received 47.24 percent and Lula 44.91 percent of the votes. With this, a run-off (second round) election will be held between the two on October 25.
Flavio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for allegedly plotting a military coup to overturn the results of the previous election. With Flavio's strong showing in the first round, Lula will face a tough run in the second round. The biggest challenge for Lula now is to prevent the Brazilian presidency from being taken over by right-wing forces.
Trump mistakes Brazil for India.. strange post on social media!
